<p>
I've made a few homemade gifts. If you are behind on your gift list, hopefully some of my projects will help!
<p>
I made more coasters using copyright-free images, ceramic tiles, and mod podge (I backed them with felt squares cut to size and mod podged on). The theme can be suited to each individual. It is quick, easy, and inexpensive to make.
<p>

<p>
For a quick stocking stuffer, I made little keychains out of "paracord" and key rings from the dollar store:
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKTgSai2Ka25nAmW3EJTTsTaZmDOGYSlE_dJ1Z-ogmPYm12-Q54EMp7VNnzSdKAqz-EJ4AMhem_qIhjoBI5a0vvm8Ik-ETYMO3T1PU0uHGpCoCeZiN1emICzHi3XT6yaXokP_7qJRNfdnM/s2048/20201204_220913.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" height="320" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKTgSai2Ka25nAmW3EJTTsTaZmDOGYSlE_dJ1Z-ogmPYm12-Q54EMp7VNnzSdKAqz-EJ4AMhem_qIhjoBI5a0vvm8Ik-ETYMO3T1PU0uHGpCoCeZiN1emICzHi3XT6yaXokP_7qJRNfdnM/s320/20201204_220913.jpg"/></a>
</div>
<p>
The pattern for Paracord Buddy Keychain is available online from <a href="http://craftandcreativity.com/blog/tag/paracord-buddy-keychain/" target="_blank">CraftAndCreativity.com</a>
<p>
I am very ecological and I like to take my own straw when going to get fast food. I bought metal straws at my dollar plus store. I cut two 5" wide x two 11" long pieces of cotton fabric and added a zipper to make a pouch. For a larger family and more straws, increase the width of the pouch.
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVb7bAea_mxEG0IC9D891eKi5tEV6oMmovfJV_8-yAGAjEI2PH_8PCrAQviP_ZBWnYYcIKSnJ9ndlpGmrer4qoEcPl3VqFoK5eu87XCkqrinOAYa9V2jq62MDLllp9I7OffJZTny6ao739/s2048/20201204_085839.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="320" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVb7bAea_mxEG0IC9D891eKi5tEV6oMmovfJV_8-yAGAjEI2PH_8PCrAQviP_ZBWnYYcIKSnJ9ndlpGmrer4qoEcPl3VqFoK5eu87XCkqrinOAYa9V2jq62MDLllp9I7OffJZTny6ao739/s320/20201204_085839.jpg"/></a></div>
<p>
Lastly, I sewed a quilt block for myself. I'm not generally a fan of pink, but I love this one! It's from <a href="https://fabric406.com/blogs/fabric406-blog/traditional-quilt-block-castle-tower-tutorial" target="_blank">Fabric406.com</a>

Happy crafting, and happy holidays!

<p>
Along with sewing and knitting, I also wanted to include some general crafting for presents.
<p>
I watched one of my favourite YouTuber's create coasters from tiles using Mod Podge. This inspired me to make a gift for my long-time friend. She is redecorating her master bedroom with a theme of nature.
<p>
She has recently mentioned to me (a few times) about her love of dandelions. I thought that this project would be a perfect gift for her!
<p>
<b>ART COASTERS (OR WALL HANGINGS)
<p>
- 4 copy-right free images from the internet (or your personal photography)
<p>
- 4 - 4" ceramic tiles (I used glossy)
<p>
- Mod-Podge or other decoupage glue (I chose matte finish)
<p>- wide foam brush or paint brush
<p>
- cardboard or plastic chopping boards (dollar store) to use as a work surface
<p>
1. Print out photos to fit your tiles. My tiles were 4" squares, so I ordered my 4 x 4" photos at my local store online. (It is easier to crop your images into a square shape before you upload.) Select small image (my option was up to 6") to get the best pixal quality for your image. Alternatively, you can print the images you select on your own personal printer, or send them to an office shop.
<p>
2. Check your ceramic tiles. Make sure that they are clean and not chipped/broken.
<p>
3. On a flat work surface, place a tile. Pour about a tablespoon of the Mod Podge over top of the tile surface and evenly spread with your foam or paint brush. Let set for a couple of minutes. Place the image right-side up on top of the poured and smoothed Mod Podge on tile. Place about another tablespoon of Mod Podge over your image, smoothing out from the centre. Re-straigten as needed, and coat entire top of image. Make sure that you apply evenly and don't leave fingerprints as it gets tacky.
<p>
4. Your Mod Podge creation should set up and dry clearly within 20 minutes. Be patient though. It's best to let it completely dry over night.
<p>
My project:
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7k_Qt5j4g3JRjaCiVaTz13HI3k6ZNwMqQayvRTUS8NctxLWZtg4r_dSiZbz6-lEpDZoskLjPUn4OM5cIrLxzG6sm97ycBrZ47a6NNRQui9vQuE3Az6FYWG8mBNp6D73nLlkU39LfCwQtM/s2048/20201123_084736.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" height="320" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7k_Qt5j4g3JRjaCiVaTz13HI3k6ZNwMqQayvRTUS8NctxLWZtg4r_dSiZbz6-lEpDZoskLjPUn4OM5cIrLxzG6sm97ycBrZ47a6NNRQui9vQuE3Az6FYWG8mBNp6D73nLlkU39LfCwQtM/s320/20201123_084736.jpg"/></a></div>
<p>
<p>
I am thrilled with the results!
<p>
This was a simple project, but inexpensive and very rewarding.
<p>
Total cost per tile: 29 cents CDN
<p>
Total cost per print: 39 cents CDN
<p>
Mod Podge that I bought years ago, so I'm figuring it's paid for itself
<p>
I bought a cute Christmas box from the dollar store that fits these perfectly. I will also include some felt padding to put on the bottoms so that they don't scratch any table.
<p>

Cats and quilts go together so well!
<p>
I came across Mama Spark's World's <a href="https://mamaspark.blogspot.com/2016/10/cheddar-jack-block-pattern-release.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Cheddar Jack</a> quilt block and I had to make it!
<p>
Thankfully, and luckily, this pattern is free to download. It was uploaded in 2016 and so I'm happy to have come across it.
<p>
Here is my version:
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_Kebxk1VbTHDoZ_YscA_vdCXu9Saj7fPG0hyKIs6AdLJARQhv4jzsnN-0fKGOFOqiCWiNO8L2f4_tQR0hsvvUW344jm7blmA8R6sKt2thGnjrrHXE3e0QJTcV_6WMz79Tl89K4FKtpiD8/s2048/cat+quilt+block.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="320" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_Kebxk1VbTHDoZ_YscA_vdCXu9Saj7fPG0hyKIs6AdLJARQhv4jzsnN-0fKGOFOqiCWiNO8L2f4_tQR0hsvvUW344jm7blmA8R6sKt2thGnjrrHXE3e0QJTcV_6WMz79Tl89K4FKtpiD8/s320/cat+quilt+block.jpg"/></a></div>

His one ear is slightly off (oops!), but I love him anyway!

I don't know why I hadn't heard of this event earlier.
<p>
This is their third series, featuring both difficult and easy blocks.
<p>
I started off with the easy squares, block #35, which had just been released:
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgflkSAERCpNlRdSrVueYPm1dAzUO6NDlYLE-oLndSDYwNEXkcrYhlxbp8txWZCTsMCLFQZhdyED8NEMEnsFpCqnCKIfakDrTu_LtYyWJvBBCpj7FbA264Lxd9JtDyle3F7i7ydf82tU290/s960/35.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="320" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgflkSAERCpNlRdSrVueYPm1dAzUO6NDlYLE-oLndSDYwNEXkcrYhlxbp8txWZCTsMCLFQZhdyED8NEMEnsFpCqnCKIfakDrTu_LtYyWJvBBCpj7FbA264Lxd9JtDyle3F7i7ydf82tU290/s320/35.jpg"/></a></div>
<p>
It was a fun and easy block to make. I'm still kind of figuring out my colour scheme, and I'm not sure if the blue will be used in any of my other blocks. I do love the purple and green combination, though and have enough of it to complete several more blocks.
<p>
There are several ways to make this block stand out. I am a part of the Moda Blockheads Facebook group and some of the blocks posted are spectacular.
<p>
The second block was another easy one. I had to make some adjustments as mine didn't quite line up with the suggested cutting dimensions. Here is my alternate block #18:
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH0BwY7LWGNTLrMfGbOlvH_VWDO5Bu_IjkdJuG0TkqBFdrFpyTqUsMQt5wjhl3vyxEbEjqfTM1NKey6D9dTs3_9DZn6Qb-lzRpA1JGcwR2m_TAwkf6ei0zK8bh7f5RSs-0TCcSkQXUaDCd/s960/18.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" height="320" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="720" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH0BwY7LWGNTLrMfGbOlvH_VWDO5Bu_IjkdJuG0TkqBFdrFpyTqUsMQt5wjhl3vyxEbEjqfTM1NKey6D9dTs3_9DZn6Qb-lzRpA1JGcwR2m_TAwkf6ei0zK8bh7f5RSs-0TCcSkQXUaDCd/s320/18.jpg"/></a></div>
<p>
I love this easy design and am pondering the possibility of making a whole row of these for a bed runner.
<p>
The <a href="https://bearcreekquiltingcompany.com/moda-blockheads-2018/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Blockheads II (2018)</a> patterns are available from Bear Creek Quilting Company.
<p>
The patterns for Blockheads I (2017) have now been removed for free access. They have been published together in a <a href="https://my.modafabrics.com/shop/itemDetail.do?item-id=1073396" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">book</a> for purchase by Moda.

<p>
My long-time friend and I have been mailing cards to each other each month for a while. These are well-received little pick-me-ups because it's especially nice to know that someone is thinking of you. And, let's face it, this isolation thing has been difficult. Even more so for my friend who's living alone.
<p>
For June I wanted to include a little something extra in the card. It had to be small and virtually weightless as the cost of mailing something has gone up.
<p>
Through a Pintrest search I found Crafty Staci's <a href="https://www.craftystaci.com/blog/quick-fabric-corner-bookmarks">Quick Fabric Corner Bookmark</a>. It's small, it's quick, it takes very little material and it will fit nicely in the envelope with the card.
<p>
Of course, just one wouldn't do!
<p>

<p>
Sewing of masks has been a controversial topic on sewing forums. My conclusion is that having one is better than not having one.
<p>
These masks are NOT intended to replace high-filter masks that block 98% of germs via the COVID-19 virus. However, along with strict adherence to social distancing of at least 2 metres, these masks could prove worthy of wearing.
<p>
This pattern is from <a href="https://www.craftpassion.com/face-mask-sewing-pattern/#face-mask-pattern">Craft Passion</a>:

<p>
The top pattern was from two 6 x 9" pieces of fabric and 25" of binding used for each of the ties (original pattern calls for 40" in total). The tutorial from The Missouri Star Quilt Company is available to watch on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_-R8Ox3Spw">YouTube</a>.
<p>
For both patterns, I used cotton on the outside and fleece on the inside.

<p>
I've seen this little, free bear project and decided to make a few.
<p>
Using a short-matt fabric that I stole from a second-hand stuffed animal kit that I bought a while ago, I started with this little guy:
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhucFUTAUFNv2GVOHWmPwa0GPUUAaDttZYr6OEI9OP0S7jU7iyyJoHUe-yWSe9Vzo02gh8P6UUrWASvag3IP1UU4sObOJf28lnNRN04upWow7e0q-qJdRa58PbsVHCfnzxVXUFKGRDyXqej/s1600/20200401_141625.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhucFUTAUFNv2GVOHWmPwa0GPUUAaDttZYr6OEI9OP0S7jU7iyyJoHUe-yWSe9Vzo02gh8P6UUrWASvag3IP1UU4sObOJf28lnNRN04upWow7e0q-qJdRa58PbsVHCfnzxVXUFKGRDyXqej/s320/20200401_141625.jpg" width="180" height="320" data-original-width="900" data-original-height="1600" /></a></div>
<p>
The locking eyes and applique need to be done first, before sewing and stuffing the bear. I think that Jake turned out quite cute!
<p>
Next, came Fred:
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh24-hlLSSyIql1VBZG-lcZI96le3Pn70XYnBeX_RTnGz_Lg5OW5MKQ7osXzm4rWF1Lded7oVgKiXdIXqr02O_pweTIT8CWlRFFN_G1Wt2DKAwBPGOskO5fLhiz2eCDZ5SZbpFHLhTYX7_U/s1600/20200401_141806.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh24-hlLSSyIql1VBZG-lcZI96le3Pn70XYnBeX_RTnGz_Lg5OW5MKQ7osXzm4rWF1Lded7oVgKiXdIXqr02O_pweTIT8CWlRFFN_G1Wt2DKAwBPGOskO5fLhiz2eCDZ5SZbpFHLhTYX7_U/s320/20200401_141806.jpg" width="320" height="180" data-original-width="1600" data-original-height="900" /></a></div>
<p>
Fred is extremely soft. He's made out a polyester blanket that I bought a while ago at the dollar-plus store for $4.00 (Canadian). He turned out very cute, but cutting out the fabric was messy as the fibres went everywhere in my sewing room. After being sewn up, though, he no longer sheds. I also have a lot of the blanket left to make more, when my patience resumes.
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWqMEb8m9YxTiKwWqsR8_pg4MEMYB7mp9sHd6mdIHkCQ1bwDbzI3pkRHuBoSvXuKMvVzLi-hoaBEUPlX_rLqAMv-0Mk5R-bBAiWrInRYkGSBKivSGZO0wVkltZZ3eVokwKIkqXGj5361-T/s1600/20200402_224031.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWqMEb8m9YxTiKwWqsR8_pg4MEMYB7mp9sHd6mdIHkCQ1bwDbzI3pkRHuBoSvXuKMvVzLi-hoaBEUPlX_rLqAMv-0Mk5R-bBAiWrInRYkGSBKivSGZO0wVkltZZ3eVokwKIkqXGj5361-T/s320/20200402_224031.jpg" width="240" height="320" data-original-width="1200" data-original-height="1600" /></a></div>
<p>
My teen son has claimed Fred. He was also the one to name him...
<p>The pattern for Warren the Charity Bear comes from <a href="https://www.shinyhappyworld.com/2014/04/warren-charity-bear-free-teddy-bear-pattern.html">Shiny Happy World</a>.

For using the pattern, we will be making a donation to our local food bank in this (greater) time of need.

<p>
Last week I sewed a mug mat. It was a quick project, made with two fat quarters.
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAFbBUbtF85ahfAUn75hctg06P2cAEPXCn9WZNIb4YeSmsWjWNvtlTahCoGWTLvrFt0rv4eLuarelavA51YdInYxUZQIEm1EY4pQqHq1fs2hyQr05HB-Xd1iNTw4GgS-zH37rb0omJSpjl/s1600/20200327_182556.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAFbBUbtF85ahfAUn75hctg06P2cAEPXCn9WZNIb4YeSmsWjWNvtlTahCoGWTLvrFt0rv4eLuarelavA51YdInYxUZQIEm1EY4pQqHq1fs2hyQr05HB-Xd1iNTw4GgS-zH37rb0omJSpjl/s320/20200327_182556.jpg" width="320" height="180" data-original-width="1600" data-original-height="900" /></a></div>
<p>
It was with an idea from the <a href="https://craftyforhome.com/2020/03/02/easy-oval-mug-rug-tutorial/?utm_medium=social&utm_source=pinterest&utm_campaign=tailwind_tribes&utm_content=tribes&utm_term=1013286492_46318674_181754">Crafty For Home</a> blog.
<p>
I found a bird on Pintrest and traced it to make my applique (only glued on with heavy-duty fusing, not sewn). The quirky legs were made free-hand and very fussy.
<p>
Happy crafting!

<p>
Today is day 9 of self-isolation. It really hasn't been too bad, especially since I have a stash of crafting supplies.
<p>
I've been eyeing a pattern for a free orange slice mug mat from <a href="https://fortworthfabricstudio.blogspot.com/2016/02/fabric-frenzy-friday.html#_a5y_p=5677941">Fort Worth Fabric Studio</a> for a while. Yesterday I pulled out my array of orange fabrics and began my mug mat.
<p>
It was my first time trying applique, and I am enthralled by the possibilities that it opened up!
<p>
I followed directions, but knew that I wouldn't be able to achieve the proper quilting of the segments because I hadn't spaced by orange segments symmetrically as per instructions given. Thus began my change from an orange slice to a flower, from looking at it, I decided that it needed to be a pillow and not a mug mat!
<p>
I added strips of fabric on all four sides of the pillow front, and used matching fabric on the back to make the envelope pillow cover. Finished cover fits 16" square pillow form (that I've had for quite a while, and bought cheap at a thrift store).
<p>
Happy sewing, and stay HOME! :)Val Campbellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17031577318484467941noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2017390475279916000.post-47318110873841197142019-12-18T10:35:00.000-08:002019-12-18T10:36:50.364-08:00Other small sewing projectsI love making small projects. The results are fast.
<p>
I made this Toddler Pillow and Case a few years ago. I've used it as a travel pillow on flights.
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinQxFjktkKjXB_AYCJMCNbV83WRu0C1s3lPvGmFzf93T7Gn6jRIrPu0Nf9vm3mYi0v6FuloHeFhwTvnEhKnic6XrcP8aNXgYtNhXJGcm9wL2-fpZmKjcyK9e-HTIRq9uRCh9KgpXJDDo3o/s1600/20191217_084955.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinQxFjktkKjXB_AYCJMCNbV83WRu0C1s3lPvGmFzf93T7Gn6jRIrPu0Nf9vm3mYi0v6FuloHeFhwTvnEhKnic6XrcP8aNXgYtNhXJGcm9wL2-fpZmKjcyK9e-HTIRq9uRCh9KgpXJDDo3o/s320/20191217_084955.jpg" width="320" height="180" data-original-width="1600" data-original-height="900" /></a></div>
<p>
The pattern includes instruction on how to make the little pillow and the pillowcase.
<p>
My son loves the pillow so much that he shared the pillow during the flight...
<p>
The pattern is from <a href="https://schoolhousepatterns.wordpress.com/free-patterns/the-toddler-pillow-case/">Schoolhouse Patterns</a>.
<p>
<p>
Pintrest has a lot of free patterns if you search for pincushions. I made this one a few years ago.
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq86x3oCAxnNkyqQdv4OgQXMRqQkpR-T9MfmeWIpGzypXRCowwgyyOTb4RIk4JlAgIs2EQ8DuZ5hxuVqcj0RrML-gVRZJGA4reDaq3JOlc3fzwV6uaCZmjyQNKhc6s_uf5PzRUJ020GC-s/s1600/20191213_080501.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq86x3oCAxnNkyqQdv4OgQXMRqQkpR-T9MfmeWIpGzypXRCowwgyyOTb4RIk4JlAgIs2EQ8DuZ5hxuVqcj0RrML-gVRZJGA4reDaq3JOlc3fzwV6uaCZmjyQNKhc6s_uf5PzRUJ020GC-s/s320/20191213_080501.jpg" width="180" height="320" data-original-width="900" data-original-height="1600" /></a></div>
<p>
I'm not quite sure which pattern I used on this one. I will post when I find the source.
<p>
Happy crafting!

You drive yourself crazy with all the possibilities of gift giving!
<p>
I saw this <b>log cabin Santa ornament</b> and thought that I just had to make it.

This new YouTube video from <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmKG3bEzvjA">Mom and Pop Quilt Shop</a> is the only good video that I've found out there for this project.
<p>
I used a black sharpie for the eyes. I bought puny beads but I couldn't see them well enough to attach them...
<p>
<p>
For those who are eco-friendly and want to eliminate the use of aluminum foil or plastic wrap to put things away, these <b>reusable bowl covers</b> are ideal:
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipT0GYuEGZNjRGbEqrzAgR6HYumIZ61xqxnzqluViEE0WehLXHKj8-ZnUVijs396vNaQDBTBV6outjlVccRj3fs63M3g5yctkPU6pZeejaw_b-5-YlM93kOkcEVVoxKB1k6WC-4OItuHJw/s1600/20191206_173614.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipT0GYuEGZNjRGbEqrzAgR6HYumIZ61xqxnzqluViEE0WehLXHKj8-ZnUVijs396vNaQDBTBV6outjlVccRj3fs63M3g5yctkPU6pZeejaw_b-5-YlM93kOkcEVVoxKB1k6WC-4OItuHJw/s320/20191206_173614.jpg" width="320" height="180" data-original-width="1600" data-original-height="900" /></a></div>
<p>
I made these reversible covers in medium and large with material for $10 a metre at Michael's and some thin batting.
<p>
The project consists of cutting out circles and sewing them together, turning them rights sides out and creating a tube in which to insert some elastic.
<p>
There are many tutorials online. My preferred video is from <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lzsiwd8aJdw&t=56s">Shabby Fabrics</a>.
<p>
<p>
Last year, one of the presents that I made was a <b>sewn phone stand pillow</b>.

<p>
I filled mine with dried barley and rice and polyester stuffing.
<p>
Now I just need to make one for every room. :)
<p>
<p>
Of course, as mentioned in a recent post, these zippered triangular pouches are fast and fun:

<p>
I've only made one so far:
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuvm6uQ7tZRpowYYv1HmYAxH9a9mFpJ_7_dO-egEhN7jy54XPlcR9ss_9o7AbTy17oCP-azEVaY4dyLEkiaKnUMDBWR7hLpFdLuaRtLykLa_cMLv3XzYu9bSX5lpKv2eB35pRGNnnxri9B/s1600/20191120_172254.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuvm6uQ7tZRpowYYv1HmYAxH9a9mFpJ_7_dO-egEhN7jy54XPlcR9ss_9o7AbTy17oCP-azEVaY4dyLEkiaKnUMDBWR7hLpFdLuaRtLykLa_cMLv3XzYu9bSX5lpKv2eB35pRGNnnxri9B/s320/20191120_172254.jpg" width="180" height="320" data-original-width="900" data-original-height="1600" /></a></div>
<p>
I plan to make more of these, and have already prepared fabric strips to make them. The width of your fabric dictates the finished size. This star began with fabric strips 4 x 16".
<p>
The tutorial that I used was from <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsZKQWAp7tc">Mr. Domestic</a>. He is so much fun to watch.
<p>
Another wonderfully written, step-by-step tutorial with photos is from <a href="https://craftingarainbow.com/2015/12/06/scandinavian-fabric-stars/">Crafting Rainbow</a>.
<p>
These are so much fun to make, and would make a cute present topper.
<p>

The stockings are finished!It's hard to believe, but December is already underway!
<p>
I have several projects on the go right now. I'm trying to decide exactly which project to gift each person.
<p>
I finished the third and fourth of four stockings for my family. This one is for me:
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0NwiAmU-7HiLRVN3fSBs4Y9MK67hHbwbFyUQ1Jt_IEl9-iFnxPrR4eWa7O1STfCuq7k8x4toNvCcnDU_ySvBsN2SqBwED672jXh1Cj1kKOt12QeTGc6HaZ-IM6s7U3KqqzAoLJh-lKBXS/s1600/20191204_112454.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0NwiAmU-7HiLRVN3fSBs4Y9MK67hHbwbFyUQ1Jt_IEl9-iFnxPrR4eWa7O1STfCuq7k8x4toNvCcnDU_ySvBsN2SqBwED672jXh1Cj1kKOt12QeTGc6HaZ-IM6s7U3KqqzAoLJh-lKBXS/s320/20191204_112454.jpg" width="180" height="320" data-original-width="900" data-original-height="1600" /></a></div>
<p>
I'm unsure of the fibres in the gold fabric; I got a scrap of it from the thrift store. It was a thin, sheer material that frayed greatly. (I don't care to use it again and so will be re-donating it.) I wanted my stocking to be a bit "blingy," and was pleased with the results.
<p>
Here is stocking number four, made out of fleece:
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPaKrg4UlXp-mnbAJJx7zo0FaQqg8pGZ_LHBqaXJetLayWWXqsb1K_jU8sd1Kvqg705kk6PXyL2-EnhNFKxnfrEMiMapvByq_9cubzSaVBNfr0_c3FlqriSKV6B18CKGTnphcG_H8BvMxT/s1600/20191203_170533.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPaKrg4UlXp-mnbAJJx7zo0FaQqg8pGZ_LHBqaXJetLayWWXqsb1K_jU8sd1Kvqg705kk6PXyL2-EnhNFKxnfrEMiMapvByq_9cubzSaVBNfr0_c3FlqriSKV6B18CKGTnphcG_H8BvMxT/s320/20191203_170533.jpg" width="180" height="320" data-original-width="900" data-original-height="1600" /></a></div>
<p>
I've seen store stockings and none of them were made with the same quality and love as the handmade ones. <3
<p>
The stocking template used is available for free <a href="https://gluesticksblog.com/christmas-stocking-pattern/">here</a>.
<p>
Happy crafting,

<p>
I'm making a small care package to send off to a friend soon. She's someone who, like most of us, has everything that they could possibly need. In it I want to include a few homemade items, including one of these and a theatre gift card.
<p>
These popcorn bags come the instructions in Scrappy Patch's <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKEyLrEcvug&t=611s">video</a>.
<p>
You will need:
<p>
100% cotton fabric, two pieces measuring 18 x 22"
<p>
100% cotton thread
<p>
Seam allowance: 1/4 inch
<p>
Place fabric right sides together, leaving turning space on long side of bag. Clip corners, turn, roll out seams, and press.
<p>
On the lining fabric, fold down 2 inches on one short side and press. Fold bottom to meet with top part. Sew up sides.
<p>
Stick your finger inside bag, making box corners 1 inch from point. Sew and clip to remove bulk.
<p>
Turn your bag to the right side and press out corners.
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv1sizt2SCw6hmY-WrKw5F8li_FqUnFf9XoYT2lqL7yRZWUujBYbYYMDriKJXiWqKVpE2V7wsfDHxdOLtUOlqmcMycpeXBy1QlN3oAa04R-ohsjYTeI27iMSyWINbYV-Qv2P2PrrFIbOs8/s1600/20191128_164605.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv1sizt2SCw6hmY-WrKw5F8li_FqUnFf9XoYT2lqL7yRZWUujBYbYYMDriKJXiWqKVpE2V7wsfDHxdOLtUOlqmcMycpeXBy1QlN3oAa04R-ohsjYTeI27iMSyWINbYV-Qv2P2PrrFIbOs8/s320/20191128_164605.jpg" width="320" height="180" data-original-width="1600" data-original-height="900" /></a></div>
<p>
The first that I sewed I neglected to check that my thread was 100% cotton. It wasn't, and so I had to rip the seams of the whole body. Luckily, I found one thread that was 100% cotton. You do not see the thread, so any colour will suffice. (Anything other than 100% cotton thread and fabric will not fare well in the microwave.)
<p>
This was a simple project and the results are quick.
<p>
Insert 1/2 cup unpopped corn kernels in bag. Place bag on plate. Cook for 2 1/2 minutes (could take longer, depending on the power of your microwave). Do not leave unattended while cooking. NOTE: Plate and popcorn in bag will be very hot - handle with care.
<p>
Happy crafting!

<p>
I sent her a photo of my available fabrics to choose from. I think that they turned out quite well.

<p>
Since I found the first stocking that I made kind of small, I used the larger stocking template from <a href="https://gluesticksblog.com/christmas-stocking-pattern/">this page</a> instead.
<p>
I also finished another family stocking. The fabric is "Don't Feed the Bears" from Patrick Lose Fabrics, topped with some snowflake fabric found at the thrift store. So cute!

(Only select Walmart stores here in Canada carry fabric, and only a few of them carry these designs. I have four(!) Walmarts within a relatively short drive; two sell fabric, and only one had this fabric.)
<p>
A few months ago I began a project using this fabric, and today I found some time to sit down and finish it.
<p>
I am so thrilled with the results!
<p>
<p>

This is the inside of the bag. I didn't have a single piece of fabric large enough to match the outside of the bag, so had to sew pieces together to fit.

The instructions in the video called for longer straps of 40+". I only had fabric 12 x 18" so made straps by sewing pieces together to my desired length. The straps were sewn in 2" from each outside seam, making sure that they matched.
<p>
I also top-stitched the final bag about 1/2" from the top.

This is mine.
<p>
The source of this recipe is unknown, but it's been my favourite cookie since childhood:
<p>
<p>
<center>
<U>BUTTER BALLS</U>
<p>
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
<p>
1/4 teaspoon salt
<p>
1/2 cup butter
<p>
2 eggs
<p>
1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
<p>
Icing sugar
</center>
<p>
Stir flour and salt together. Cream butter; add sugar gradually, beating between additions. Add eggs; mix well. Blend in flour and form dough into 1" balls.
<p>
Place on cookie sheets and bake at 375F. for 20 to 25 minutes.
<p>
Roll in icing sugar when fresh from oven (before they've cooled).
<p>
Cookies best served chilled, in my opinion.
<p>
<center>* * *</center>
<p>
<center>
<U>DELICIOUS BUTTER TARTS</U> (most likely from Edith Adams of The Vancouver Sun newspaper)
<p>
1 1/2 cup raisins
<p>
4 tablespoons butter
<p>
2 eggs
<p>
2 cups brown sugar
<p>
Tart shells
</center>
<p>
Soak raisins in boiling water until plump.
<p>
Cream butter. Add eggs and brown sugar and beat until frothy.
<p>
Bake at 350F for 15 to 20 minutes.
<p>
<center>* * *</center>
<p>
<center>
<U>BUBBLE LOAF</U>
<p>
3/4 cup skim milk
<p>
1/4 cup sugar
<p>
1 teaspoon salt
<p>
1/4 cup shortening
<p>
1/4 cup warm water
<p>
1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
<p>
1 egg, beaten
<p>
4 cups all-purpose flour
<p>
1/4 cup candied cherries
<p>
1/4 cup raisins
<p>
1/4 cup icing sugar
<p>
4 whole candied cherries, chopped finely
<p>
Melted butter
<p>
Icing sugar
</center>
<p>
1. Scald milk. Stir in sugar, salt and shortening and mix until sugar is completely dissolved.
<p>
2. In another bowl, measure warm water and sprinkle in the yeast; stir until dissolved. Add lukewarm milk mixture to dissolved yeast. Add egg and mix well. Add flour and beat until smooth. Gradually add, while beating, flour and beat until mixed. Turn out on lightly floured board. Knead until smooth and velvety - about 10 minutes.
<p>
3. Place in a greased bowl; brush top with oil. Cover; let rise in a warm place, free from draft for about one hour, or until double in bulk. Punch down. Knead again until soft and velvety - about 5 minutes.
<p>
4. Cut dough in small pieces, the size of walnuts. Form into balls. Roll in melted butter. Place buttered balls, so that they are almost touching, in a well-greased 10" tube pan to cover bottom. Top with candied cherries and raisins. Place the remainder of the balls over cherries and raisins. Cover and let rise again, in a warm place for about 45 minutes or until double in bulk.
<p>
5. Bake at 375F. for 35 to 40 minutes. Remove from oven. Let stand for 5 minutes.
<p>
6. Remove from pan and frost with icing sugar. Sprinkle with chopped candied cherries.
<p>
Serves 10.
<p>

This craft is found in different spaces online, but I found <a href="https://blog.dogundermydesk.com/2011/11/circle-zip-earbud-pouch-tutorial/">this site</a> the most useful. There is the template and the step-by-step instructions included on the same page. For a video tutorial, try <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvnOpcntiqg">this</a> YouTube video.

I sewed a few items before starting my stocking-making venture.
<p>
This little triangle pouch was from Vanessa of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXZ6BTEnPE4">The Crafty Gemini</a>. You only need two 5x10" pieces of fabric, a 7" zipper and thin batting. It was a quick and fun project.
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-GeOCJwXZp3tfrA_XwxW2PUymezF1e7gY09f-JFsz36PG4NMIPJScFuN6J1vuqkqIbDwrL7baZf07gk5EYAHXXKycHHPYGii-5GaNPO_SIg5k7jP60ua41I6qH97jNgJw4cBCcbkQjCL0/s1600/20191120_095810.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-GeOCJwXZp3tfrA_XwxW2PUymezF1e7gY09f-JFsz36PG4NMIPJScFuN6J1vuqkqIbDwrL7baZf07gk5EYAHXXKycHHPYGii-5GaNPO_SIg5k7jP60ua41I6qH97jNgJw4cBCcbkQjCL0/s320/20191120_095810.jpg" width="180" height="320" data-original-width="900" data-original-height="1600" /></a></div>
<p>
I've ordered a knockoff version of Wonder Clips from <a href="https://www.amazon.ca/50pcs-Sewing-Craft-Binding-Clamps/dp/B01KOVZ8CO/ref=sr_1_10?crid=21C7HKB9U1INA&keywords=fabric+clips&qid=1574289767&sprefix=fabric+cli%2Caps%2C220&sr=8-10">Amazon</a> (50 of them for $5). I think that they're coming from the UK, so I just used dollar store fabric clamps. I'll do a review of the clips once I receive them.
<p>
The zipper is from <a href="https://www.amazon.ca/Zippers-Sewing-Colors-Colorful-Crafts/dp/B07JLK18YJ/ref=sr_1_7?crid=2T9WRLNJABI6J&keywords=bulk+zippers&qid=1574289874&sprefix=bulk+zipp%2Caps%2C232&sr=8-7">Amazon</a>. One YouTuber mentioned buying zippers in bulk - smart!
<p>
I'm not a fan of pink, but I love this fabric.
<p>
Of course, pouch can be made larger or smaller.
<p>
Happy crafting!
<p>
Val :)

<p>
The past few years have been busy.
<p>
I still knit and sew. I still have fun doing both, maybe just not as often.
<p>
Today I sewed up the first of four stockings for my family. I really like how cute this lined stocking turned out.
<p>
<p>
B's stocking:
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKPPCnImksyScuaBaLfIvJ87hKI1y4OLhSQmQCu24e6tL52q3X1mzak_X-BNmTPAhYXiPQKcrQBKOcQOF0i73MA2-QZ8c3_PAMxRRI9gX7-nX50oj8XhGynfrsJuhyphenhyphenXrlpawm73qANJ1Bp/s1600/B%2527s+stocking.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKPPCnImksyScuaBaLfIvJ87hKI1y4OLhSQmQCu24e6tL52q3X1mzak_X-BNmTPAhYXiPQKcrQBKOcQOF0i73MA2-QZ8c3_PAMxRRI9gX7-nX50oj8XhGynfrsJuhyphenhyphenXrlpawm73qANJ1Bp/s400/B%2527s+stocking.jpg" width="225" height="400" data-original-width="540" data-original-height="960" /></a></div>
<p>
<p>
The fabric for the main part of the stocking was bought after Christmas last year at Fabricland (a store here in Canada), so I got a great deal on it (something like $4 a metre). The Christmas lyrics fabric on the cuff was from the Christmas fat quarters was available at Walmart ($2.49, I believe).
<p>
The pattern template was <a href="https://www.allpeoplequilt.com/holiday-quilts/christmas/easy-christmas-stocking">AllPeopleQuilt.com</a>. Cuff was cut 8" x 16". Tab was cut 2 1/2" x 7".
<p>
This pattern was for a 1/4" seam allowance. I plan on making it again, but will make it larger.
<p>
Tutorial was from a few sources: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtLOTwbLaRg">The Crafty Gemini</a>, and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YK2GlJGeH4">The Missouri Star Quilt Company</a>. I am addicted to watching both of these YouTube channels.
<p>
Happy crafting,
<p>

I was browsing rock album covers and came across a Pink Floyd album cover done in paper piecing. Awesome!<br />
<p>
This is my version of Gaya's Dark Side of the Moon (shown <a href="http://www.fandominstitches.com/2012/07/rock-our-socks.html">here</a> and available for free download also).<br />
<p>
I won't lie. It was fiddly and time-consuming but I like how it looks.
